BIRMINGHAM - The Blazers came up short on Saturday despite a fifth straight double-double from Zakyia Weathersby, falling 72-64 to Charlotte in Bartow Arena for the second game in a row.
Weathersby went 7-of-15 from the field and was perfect from the line, making all eight of her shots. In the two-game series against Charlotte, the senior center scored 42 points and collected 35 boards. She also made five blocks.
The Blazers (7-5, 2-4 C-USA) were led by junior Margaret Whitley on offense, who scored a team-high 23 points to go with six rebounds.
Freshman Lindsey Dullard recorded a career-high four assists and seven points, while sophomore Sam Mitchell returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Dec. 13.
In the first half, UAB shot 11-of-31 from the field and made just two of its 10 3-point shot attempts.
Weathersby scored a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds in the half, and the Blazers went up by five with 1:09 remaining in the second quarter, their largest lead of the weekend series.
In the third quarter, UAB was outscored 21-12, shooting 26.7% (4-of-15). Whitley and Sara Rosenfeldt tied as the Blazers' leading scorer in the quarter with three points apiece.
Despite ending the third down 52-44, UAB went on an 8-4 run to open the fourth, with Whitley and Weathersby each scoring three points in the first 2:16 of play.
The Blazers held a 56-54 advantage with just over six minutes remaining, before Charlotte went on a 15-to-8 run to end the game.
"We had two tough losses to a veteran team," head coach Randy Norton said. "I'm proud of our team's effort and I saw improvement from yesterday to today defensively. We were right there with opportunities to win both games despite not shooting the ball well."
"I thought the biggest difference in both games was that in the last three minutes, Charlotte executed and did the things it takes to win games in crunch time.
I believe in our team and I am confident we will get there. As we told the girls, we go back to work on Monday and work on getting better. Take one day at a time and one game at a time."
The Blazers will return to the court next Friday and Saturday, when they travel to Houston, Texas, for a C-USA series with Rice.
