BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team came out on the losing end of an 81-78 overtime battle against Middle Tennessee on Thursday night at Bartow Arena.
In the matchup, two Blazers posted a double-double in the same game for the first time this season and four scored in double-digits.
Freshman Lindsey Dullard, who made her first career start, posted her first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 17 boards.
For the sixth game in a row, senior Zakyia Weathersby recorded a double-double, posting a team-high 23 points to go with a game-high 20 boards.
It was the second time in three games that Weathersby has had a 20-rebound performance.
Sophomore Sam Mitchell posted a career-high 18 points off 6-of-11 shooting, while junior Margaret Whitley had 16 points.
UAB (7-6, 2-5 C-USA) opened the game cold offensively, missing its first eight shot attempts before Mitchell got the Blazers on the board at 7:17 with a 3-point basket.
Despite Middle Tennessee (10-4, 8-1 C-USA) leading by as many as 14 points in the quarter, Mitchell went on an offensive streak, making another three 3-pointers.
She ended the quarter with a team-high 12 points and UAB finished the first down just 17-23.
Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter, shooting a combined 10-of-30 from the field. Dullard and Whitley each scored a team-high five points.
UAB, down 33-38 at the half, got into a rhythm to open the third quarter. The Blazers made three straight baskets and earned their first lead of the game, up 40-38, at 8:09.
After a back-and-forth quarter from Middle Tennessee, led by its guard Anastasia Hayes with a team-high 12 points, UAB held an 56-55 advantage going into the final frame.
Weathersby led the Blazers in the fourth, scoring eight of UAB's 14 points and tacking on another six rebounds. The game came down to the final two possessions, with both Whitley and Hayes missing their last two shots, forcing overtime with both teams tied at 70.
Despite a clutch 3-point basket from Whitley and five points from Weathersby, who fouled out, the Blue Raiders outscored UAB 11-to-8 in the five-minute overtime period.
As a team, the Blazers shot 29-of-76 from the field in the game and went 13-of-38 from beyond the arc.
"We are playing well enough to win games but have to learn to close it out," coach Randy Norton said. "We continue to improve and I'm confident we will get there."
UAB will now travel to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, for a 4:00 p.m. rematch on Saturday in the Murphy Center.
