BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team hosts Middle Tennessee on Thursday night at Bartow Arena, for its first game in 12 days. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Bartow Arena.
The Blazers, a travel partner with the Blue Raiders, will then hit the road to Murfreesboro for a 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon rematch in the Murphy Center.
UAB Lately
The last time the Blazers (7-5, 2-4 C-USA) took the court was on Jan. 15-16 when they hosted Charlotte in back-to-back games.
Despite the Blazers dropping both games to the 49ers in two close contests, that series was a record-breaking one for Zakyia Weathersby. She racked up a career-high 20 rebounds, the first 20 board performance by a Blazer since 2018.
In the two games combined versus Charlotte, the senior center scored 42 points, collected 35 boards, made five blocks and posted her fifth straight double-double.
UAB's two game series on the road at Rice, scheduled for Jan. 22 and 23, was postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test within the Owls' program and related contact tracing.
Double Trouble
Weathersby, who is averaging a double-double (14.2 PPG) and (12.1 RPG), leads Conference USA in rebounding.
She has also recorded eight double-doubles this season, a league high, and is second in field goal percentage (54.6%)
Scoring Battle
The series between the Blazers and the Blue Raiders will feature the top two point getters in C-USA.
Middle Tennessee redshirt junior Anastasia Hayes leads the conference in scoring, averaging just over 27 points a game, while junior Margaret Whitley follows close behind (23.5).
Whitley leads the conference in free throw percentage (89.9%) and 3-pointers made (41), while Hayes sits atop the league in the assists category (64).
The Matchup
The Blue Raiders (9-4, 7-1 C-USA) have the top scoring offense in C-USA, averaging 77.23 points.
In conference play, they swept their two-game series with FAU, FIU and Western Kentucky and split their series with Southern Miss.
In the all-time series, Middle Tennessee holds a 13-9 advantage. UAB won the last times the two teams met, securing a 61-59 victory on Feb. 20, 2020 in Murfreesboro.
