Blazers Earn First Conference Win at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UAB women's basketball team earned their first conference victory of the season on Friday night, defeating Southern Miss on the road 85-63 in Reed Green Coliseum.
The offense was led by freshman Caitlynn Daniels who scored a career-high 21 points, hitting three 3-point baskets and going 6 of 11 from the field.
Senior Zakyia Weathersby earned her fifth double-double of the season, racking up 10 boards to go with 13 points.
As a team, UAB matched its season-high from behind the arc, netting 11 3-point baskets and shooting 44 percent (11 of 25) from range.
Margaret Whitley got the Blazers (6-3, 1-2 C-USA) started off hot, hitting a 3-point bucket to open the game.
The junior led the team with seven points in the first quarter, followed by Daniels with six.
Southern Miss (2-3, 0-3 C-USA) fought its way back into the game in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles dominated in the paint, scoring 20 of their 21 points there.
After leading by as many as 12 in the first half, UAB went in halftime up just two points, holding a 37-35 advantage.
The Blazers exploded offensively in the second half, outscoring the Golden Eagles 48-28 behind eight 3-pointers and 18 for 35 (51.4 percent) shooting.
In her first collegiate game, freshman Lindsey Dullard finished with eight points and five rebounds in 23 minutes. Maddie Walsh also had a career night with 10 points.
This is UAB's fourth straight victory over Southern Miss.
The Blazers will have a short turn-around as they face the Golden Eagles in a rematch tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
