UAB Travels to Hattiesburg For First C-USA Road Series

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team heads to Hattiesburg, Miss. to play their first C-USA road series of the season against Southern Miss.
The Blazers will face the Golden Eagles on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. and then again on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
Both games will be played in Reed Green Coliseum on the Southern Miss campus and streamed on ESPN+.
UAB LATELY
The Blazers (5-3, 0-2 C-USA) enter the two-game series against Southern Miss after going 0-2 against North Texas at home on Jan. 1-2.
In the first game against the Mean Green, junior Margaret Whitley had a career-high 35 points, hitting a career-high seven 3-pointers.
Whitley, UAB's leading scorer, has scored in double digits in all eight games this season.
In game two, senior Zakyia Weathersby posted her fourth double-double of the season, the fifth of her career, tying Whitley with a team-high 19 points and 16 boards.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Southern Miss (2-2, 0-2 C-USA) also started off the first weekend of league play 0-2, falling on the road to UTEP in back-to-back games last weekend.
The Golden Eagles have only played in four games this season, with their first five games canceled.
Freshman Melyia Grayson is the leading scorer for the Golden Eagles, leading the team with 49 points, 21 boards and three blocks.
RECENT HISTORY
The last time UAB and Southern Miss met was March 7, 2020 at Bartow Arena.
The Golden Eagles were blown out 90-46 by the Blazers, with UAB hitting 14 shots from behind the arc.
The Blazers have won the last three games against Southern Miss, dating back to Jan. 12, 2019.
Head coach Randy Norton holds a 6-5 record against the Golden Eagles.
FRESHMAN LEADER
Caitlynn Daniels, who has started four games this season, has been the only UAB freshman to crack the starting lineup.
The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native has racked up a team-high 28 assists, ties Margaret Whitley with a team-high nine steals and is averaging 8.8 points per contest.
TOP OF THE CLASS
UAB remains at the top of the conference in free-throw percentage, shooting 73.8 percent (135 of 179) from the charity stripe.
The Blazers are also No. 1 in the conference in 3-point field-goal percentage, allowing opponents to score the long ball just 23.8 percent (36 of 151 attempts) of the time.
Individually, Whitley leads the conference with a free-throw percentage average of 88.7 (63 of 71) and has made a conference-high 29 3-point baskets.
Weathersby, who already has accumulated 90 boards, 27 on offense and 63 on defense, leads the league in rebounding overall and in the defensive rebounding categories.
