BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team came up short for the second game in a row on Saturday afternoon, falling to North Texas 79-70 in Bartow Arena.
Senior Zakyia Weathersby recorded her fourth double-double of the season, grabbing 16 boards and tying Margaret Whitley with a team-high 19 points.
In the two-game series against the Mean Green, Weathersby had a combined 29 points and 25 rebounds.
UNT (5-2, 2-0 C-USA) started off the game quickly, with redshirt sophomore Quincy Noble dominating the opening quarter. She had 11 points, hitting three 3-point baskets.
The Blazers (5-3, 0-2 C-USA) shot 33 percent (7 of 21) in the first quarter, going into the second down 30-19.
After trading baskets in the first minute, UAB got into a groove offensively.
The Blazers outscored the Mean Green 20-13 in the last 7:35, with Weathersby and Caitlynn Daniels leading the team with six points apiece.
Despite trailing by as many as 13 points in the period, UAB went into the half down just 45-41.
The Blazers couldn't get anything going in the third, scoring eight points and shooting 3 of 15 (20 percent). UNT held onto a 65-49 advantage with 10 minutes remaining.
Weathersby took over the game for UAB in the fourth, playing all 10 minutes and racking up six points, five rebounds, a steal and a block. Whitley also contributed six points, helping UAB outscore the Mean Green 21-14.
However, the lead for UNT was too much for the Blazers to overcome, dropping UAB to 0-2 in C-USA games in the opening weekend of conference play.
"As we told our team from the beginning of the season, we all have to trust the process and have a mindset that we will learn and grow each game and each practice," head coach Randy Norton said.
"We are very young and at times have 4 underclassmen on the floor. That, along with several players injured, makes me even more proud of this team and the way they never quit. Our best basketball is definitely ahead of us."
Up next for the Blazers is a two-game series at C-USA opponent Southern Miss on Jan. 8-9.
Women's basketball season tickets are available by purchasing the 2020-21 Gold Card for $65.
