Track Opens Season Hosting Blazer and Vulcan Invitationals

BIRMINGHAM β The UAB track and field team opens the indoor season by hosting a pair of meets this weekend at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The 10th annual Blazer Invite begins at 10 a.m. on Friday and the sixth annual Vulcan Invite beings at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The CrossPlex will not accommodate fans during the Blazer Invite or Vulcan Invite.

"We are thrilled to be able to host these track meets this weekend," said head coach Kurt Thomas. "It gives our student-athletes an opportunity to compete, which is special this year, so we are going to take advantage of it."

The 12-team field for the Blazer Invite includes Conference USA opponents Florida Atlantic and Marshall along with Sun Belt members South Alabama and Troy. Southern Miss, Samford, Montevallo and Jacksonville State will compete in the Vulcan Invite 16-team field.

UAB enters the season with 30 returners, including Second Team All-Conference USA honoree in the pentathlon, Brittany Floyd. The Blazers also added 11 new newcomers β 10 freshman and one graduate transfer β to round out the roster.

"We have some talented freshman and experienced juniors and seniors that are all ready to compete," added Thomas. "We are excited to see Brittany Floyd and Anna Massa jump in their events.

"Our senior sprinters, Lisa Petkov, Karri Green and Ebony Tolliver will race a fun 4x200 relay on Friday. Makiyah Sills will get her hurdle season going after being a scorer last year. The distance athletes will open up as well after a good fall cross country season. We are excited to run in a track meet again and will take advantage of that."

No spectators will be allowed during the 2021 UAB track and field season.
