UAB to Open 2020 Season at Azalea City Classic Friday

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB cross country team will open the 2020 season Friday night at the Azalea City Classic, hosted by the University of South Alabama at Old Brookley Gulf Pines Golf Course in Mobile, Ala. The women's 5k race is scheduled to being at 5:50 p.m.
"The meet this weekend provides the ladies the opportunity to race for the first time in almost five months," said head coach Matt Esche. "I have been extremely pleased for how focused our girls were this summer with their training."
Joining the Blazers in the eight-team field are the likes of Louisiana, South Alabama and Troy.
In 2014, the last time UAB raced at the meet, the team came away with the title.
Coming of a sixth-place finish in the Conference USA Championships last season, the Blazers return five of seven runners in Bethan Evans, Britney Johnson, Laura Thompson, Lauren Robinson and Laura Gonzalez that competed in the event.
In addition to the 11 returning Blazers, the team added five newcomers, four freshman and one graduate transfer to this year's class.
