UAB Football Falls to Miami in Road Opener, 31-14

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The UAB Football team fell 31-14 in its road opener at Miami on Thursday night at Hard Rock Stadium.
Miami (1-0) did most of its damage on the ground, rushing for 337 yards. Cam'Ron Harris led the charge with 17 carries for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Miami outgained UAB 492-285 for the game.
Myron Mitchell had a career receiving night for the Blazers (1-1), setting career highs in both catches (8) and yards (117). Running back Spencer Brown added 16 carries for 74 yards and his 33rd career rushing touchdown.
Linebacker Noah Wilder led the team and set a career-high in tackles with 15, while also notching a sack and a quarterback hurry. In his homecoming to Miami, Kristopher Moll tallied 11 tackles, four shy of a career-high, to go along with one tackle for loss.
The Blazers struck first with 2:40 left in the opening quarter on a 16-yard pass from Tyler Johnston III to Austin Watkins Jr. for an early 7-0 lead. UAB was set up in the red zone after long snapper Jacob Fuqua forced a fumble on a UAB punt which Jarrion Street recovered at the Miami 17-yard line.
The Hurricanes responded on the next drive as running back Cam'Ron Harris broke loose on a 4th-and-1 and took it 66 yards to even the score at 7-7, which was the score after one.
Miami then took the lead with 10:04 remaining in the half when quarterback D'Eriq King found the end zone on a 12-yard rush, giving the Canes a 14-7 lead which they would bring into halftime.
Wilder led the UAB defense with eight tackles, while Mitchell had four catches for 61 yards in the half. Miami outgained UAB 249-127 in the opening stanza.
After a Miami field goal on its opening possession of the second half, the Blazers responded with a 9-play, 75-yard scoring drive. The drive was capped by a 6-yard touchdown from Spencer Brown, making it 17-14 in favor of the Canes. Brown had 47 of UAB's 75 yards on the drive.
However, Miami scored two late touchdowns in the third quarter to grab a 31-14 lead after three. Harris scored his second of the game with 4:02 left, and then King found B. Jordan on a 4-yard pass on the final play of the quarter.
The Blazers are off next week before heading to South Alabama on Thursday, Sept. 24. The game against the Jags is set for 6:30 p.m. on ESPN.
