Teiniketo Named Conference USA Most Improved Golfer of the Year

BIRMINGHAM – As voted on by Conference USA's head coaches, senior Tia Teiniketo has been named C-USA Most Improved Golfer of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday.
Along with winning C-USA Most Improved Golfer, Teiniketo also earned a spot on Second Team All-Conference USA.
The Vihti, Finland native was having a record-setting season before the end of it was cut short due to COVID-19. Teiniketo will once again lead the Blazers in 2020-21 as she returns for her redshirt senior season.
"Tia had an unbelievable year," said head coach Ryan Ashburn. "Having a 72 average is the lowest for UAB women's golf and she broke every previous school record that was set. I was disappointed she was unable to finish the full year but we are looking forward to having her back next year because she has unfinished business."
Teiniketo dropped her stroke average three entire shots from last year to this year, finishing this season with an overall average of 72.9 – the lowest in school history.
In her first tournament of the season, Teiniketo won the USA Intercollegiate with a school record 204 (-12), and also posted a program best for low 18 (67) and low 36 (135) hole scores in leading the Blazers to the overall team victory.
Teiniketo guided the Blazers to their second team victory at the Starmount Forest Fall Classic with a second place individual finish. In the process, she helped this year's UAB squad become just the second team in school history to win two or more tournaments in a season.
Overall, she tallied top 10 in four of her six tournaments and had nine rounds at or under par.
Teiniketo leads a group that returns three of its top five players from a season ago and hopes to continue etching her name into the UAB record book.
