Hecking, Wasserbauerova Named All-Conference

DALLAS - UAB's Jana Hecking has been named C-USA All-Conference Singles First Team and Adela Wasserbauerova has ben named to the All-Freshman team, the league office announced on Monday.
Hecking held down the #1 singles spot, posting a 9-3 record. She opened the season with a 6-2, 6-1 straight set victory over then #120 Chunxi Xin of Central Arkansas. She also posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Tamara Racine of Mississippi State and a 7-6, 6-2 victory against Yu Fujioka of South Alabama. She took #112 Mackenzie Clark of Tulane down to the wire, having match points on her before falling in three sets.
Prior to the cancelation of the season on March 16, Hecking had won six straight matches and seven of her last eight.
Hecking has had an impressive 2020 postseason, winning the ITA's Southern Regional Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award as well as being named to the CoSIDA District 4 Academic All-District At-Large Team.
Wasserbauerova finished the 2020 slate with a record of 8-3 #2 singles. Her top victories came against Annabelle Andrinopoulous of Indiana - 6-3, 6-4, Lahari Yelamanchili of Tulane - 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, and Grace Jennings of Samford - 7-6, 2-6, 7-5. Wasserbauerova won her last five matches and six of her last seven.
The Blazers finished the campaign with 11 victories and an unblemished 8-0 home mark while having one of its strongest finishes in program history. UAB celebrated their first victory over Tulane in almost 20 years after a 5-2 win over the Green Wave on Feb. 2. Following a setback against Mississippi State on Feb. 14, UAB rattled off an unprecedented eight straight victories. Six of those were shutouts. The winning streak was the second longest in program history.
