BIRMINGHAM – Amidst a global pandemic which forced drastic changes midway through the 2020 spring semester, UAB student-athletes were still able to excel in the classroom as the Blazers had their highest term GPA in program history.
Collectively, UAB student-athletes posted a 3.40 GPA in the spring semester. Overall, 17 of UAB's 18 sports had a 3.0 GPA or higher.
"Unprecedented has been one of the most commonly used terms in 2020. Sticking with that theme, what our student-athletes were able to accomplish in the classroom has never happened before," said Ramone Cooper, Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Services. "Our 410 student-athletes collectively earned a record-setting 3.40 term GPA. This is the second-consecutive spring in which our students have set a departmental record. To do this in the midst of a pandemic, canceled sports seasons, and a shift in course instruction shows the resiliency of our student-athletes."
The Blazers had 323 student-athletes (78%) earn a 3.0 GPA or better, 220 student-athletes (53%) post a 3.5 GPA or higher, and an astounding 103 student-athletes (25%) with a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring semester.
The tennis teams led the way as women's tennis had the highest term GPA of any sport at 3.92, while men's tennis had the highest GPA of any men's sport with a 3.69.
UAB saw 244 student-athletes land on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, while the Blazers had a league-high 86 student-athletes earn the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal.
From an Academic Progress Rate standpoint (APR), the Blazers had seven teams earn NCAA public recognition for academic excellence after ranking in the top 10% of their respective sport. Those seven teams were men's basketball, women's basketball, men's golf, women's golf, men's tennis, women's tennis and men's soccer. UAB's seven teams in the top 10% were the most of any team in Conference USA.
Overall, 10 teams posted a perfect APR score of 1,000 for the 2018-19 academic year.
Despite facing adversity, UAB student-athletes, coaches, staff and academic support services were able to remain together and post the best semester in school history.
