5/13/2020 11:08:00β―AM | Football
BIRMINGHAM β Every Wednesday throughout the summer, uabsports.com will break down the 2020 UAB football roster position-by-position, beginning today with the quarterbacks.
Β
The Blazers bring back 18 starters this season, nine on each side of the ball. The quarterback position is one that boasts a ton of talent and experience, and has a lot of weapons at their disposal.
Β
Tyler Johnston III is the incumbent starter after throwing for 2,250 yards and 17 touchdowns in nine starts last season as a redshirt sophomore. Following an injury to Johnston III at Tennessee, Dylan Hopkins started five consecutive games and earned Freshman All-Conference USA honors. A promising redshirt freshman, Bryson Lucero, appeared in one game last season and is poised to push for playing time in 2020.
Β
TYLER JOHNSTON III β REDSHIRT JUNIOR
Β
Johnston III is 10-4 as a starter for the Blazers in two-plus years and has thrown for 3,586 yards, 28 touchdowns and 24 interceptions for his career. He has four 300-yard career passing games and was on pace to throw for 3,300+ yards last season before his injury at Tennessee.
Β
DYLAN HOPKINS β REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE
Β
Hopkins sprang into action down the stretch for the Blazers and was 3-2 as the starter. Following his first start at Southern Miss, Hopkins guided UAB to three-consecutive must wins as UAB defeated UTEP, Louisiana Tech and North Texas to claim its second-straight C-USA West Division title. Hopkins ran for a career-high 163 yards against UTEP and threw for a career-best 185 yards against Louisiana Tech. Β
Β
BRYSON LUCERO β REDSHIRT FRESHMAN
Β
Lucero appeared in one game last season (38-14 victory over Old Dominion). With the redshirt off, Lucero is primed to compete for playing time this season. Lucero was looking great through six spring practices before COVID-19 suspended the school year.
Β
Redshirt sophomore and former Hoover quarterback Jalen Parker enters his second year at UAB and is and additional arm for the Blazers who brings athleticism at 6-1, 215 pounds.
Β
