BIRMINGHAM – Joan attended the very first basketball game in 1978 and has continued to follow UAB Athletics since that time. Terry and Joan have been married for 28 years; while dating, they began attending UAB basketball games with their friends, Barry and Lois Luther. They have continued supporting UAB Athletics, particularly basketball and football.
Joan is a retired UAB faculty member and continues to work on a very part-time basis as a primary care pediatric nurse practitioner at UAB. Terry and Joan love to travel and enjoy both short and long trips in their motorhome along with their fur baby, Annie. Joan and Terry live in Shelby County.
What is your favorite memory of UAB Athletics?
There isn't just one favorite memory, there are several memories of events we were fortunate to attend: the very first basketball game, UAB defeating the University of Alabama in the NIT in Tuscaloosa, the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in St. Louis, the very first UAB vs Army football game in West Point, and the 2018 Boca Raton football bowl game and championship.
Why do you support UAB Athletics and its student-athletes?
As alumni, we believe it is important to help provide scholarships for students so they can attain a quality education and pursue life opportunities. We've enjoyed the camaraderie with friends and supporters, and enjoy watching the student athletes grow and excel.
What makes you the most proud of UAB Athletics?
The focus on excellence in education (including graduation) and benevolent endeavors of the student-athletes and athletic staff makes us the most proud of UAB Athletics. We are proud of the athletic leaders including coaches and all staff.
