BIRMINGHAM – UAB track and field's Jennifer Sharpe has been selected as one of 14 recipients for the 2020 C-USA Winter Spirit of Service Award, as announced by Conference USA Commissioner Judy McLeod on Tuesday.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designated to recognize community efforts of the league's student-athletes based on significant community service, academic good standing and participation in their elected sports. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season with Tuesday's honorees representing Conference USA's winter sports: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's indoor track and field.
Sharpe has embodied the award in all aspects throughout her UAB career, particularly this season.
The senior has served 125 hours of community service since becoming a Blazer, proving willing and eager in each opportunity she's had to help. Sharpe has volunteered with various organizations including Children's of Alabama Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Veterans Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and Smile-A-Mile, among others.
In the classroom, the Waycross, Ga., native has been selected to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll for three straight years since coming to the Southside. Sharpe was also honored with the C-USA Academic Medal following her freshman year and earned a spot on the UAB Dean's List for the fall semester of 2016. She currently holds a 3.25 GPA while majoring in kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science. Sharpe has already been accepted into a Master's program in sports management and policy.
Without an opportunity to compete in outdoor competition as the season was unable to get underway, Sharpe still made her mark during indoor competition. Her season was highlighted by placing third in the triple jump at the home-hosted Vulcan Invitational after reaching a career best 11.31 meters. Sharpe also took silver in the long jump among top competition at the Boston University Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invite for her top placement of the year.
On top of all of her time commitments, Sharpe has found time to be involved as a student. She has served a marketing chair in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years and the same position in the Women in Entrepreneurship Society for two years. She also owns a business, Wigs By Jenn.
As she's balanced her involvement, commitment and endeavors through her time at UAB, Sharpe has consistently served others to represent the perfect recipient for this award.
