BIRMINGHAM – While the UAB track and field team's 2019-20 season was limited to indoor competition, the Blazers still came away with many successes through the year. From medaling at the Conference USA Indoor Championships to breaking program records, UAB has much to revere when looking back.
The Blazers hosted the 2020 Conference USA Indoor Championships for their final competition of the season. Junior Brittany Floyd turned in UAB's top performance individually, taking home silver in the pentathlon. The Columbus, Ga., native placed first in the long jump and second in both the 60-meter hurdles and 800-meter run against the best the conference has to offer. As a unit, UAB fielded a distance medley team of senior Serena Martinez, redshirt junior Celestial Moon, junior Bethan Evans and sophomore Jabriana Jemison that claimed bronze in the event.
For their performances at the pinnacle of the indoor season, Floyd and UAB's DMR squad each earned All-Conference USA honors. Floyd was named Second Team All-Conference USA while the DMR unit garnered Third Team All-Conference USA honors.
Prior to the conference championship, Evans made her mark in the UAB record books. The Pontyclun, Wales, native set the program's all-time 1,000-meter race record at Boston University's Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invite after clocking in at 2:54.82. In that meet alone, three other Blazers etched their names into Blazer history as freshman Rosalind Staie moved to second in UAB history in the shot put, senior Karri Green earned the third all-time slot in the 400-meter dash and junior Ebony Tolliver followed just behind Green in the same event to stand in fourth. Another notable performance early in the season was turned in by senior Marielle Lewis, who notched second in program history with her performance in the 600-meter run at the home hosted Blazer Invitational.
Three other Blazers and a DMR squad took home gold in the early stages of the season. Freshman Alicia Abalos Cervera earned her first gold medal in the Green and Gold Invitational after winning the 600-meter race. Floyd also won a pentathlon inside the Birmingham CrossPlex at the Samford Multi after winning three individual events outright. UAB's DMR team of graduate senior Lisa Petkov, Green, Lewis and Tolliver finished first in its relay at the BSC Panther Ice Breaker as well.
One of the strongest performers to don the Green and Gold early in the season was junior Anna Massa. Excelling in the pole vault, Massa won two straight gold medals in the BSC Panther Ice Breaker and the Vulcan Invitational. Her performance in the latter meet stands as the second highest mark in Blazer history and earned her UAB's only Conference USA Field Athlete of the Week honor of the season.
After building up steam throughout the season heading into outdoor competition, the Blazers will look to carry that momentum into their next chapter.
Effective March 16, Conference USA announced that all spring sport competition and championships have been canceled. For more information regarding the Coronavirus, visit www.uab.edu/coronavirus.
