BIRMINGHAM – Behind a four-run first inning against Colgate and a shutdown performance in the circle from Emily Kachel against Jacksonville, the UAB softball team went 2-0 on Saturday in the second day of action at the UAB Tournament.
The Blazers (14-11) defeated Colgate 5-3 in the first game of the day and topped Jacksonville 1-0 behind a career-high 11 strikeouts from Kachel in the second game.
UAB 5, COLGATE 3
A four-run first inning propelled the Blazers to a 5-3 victory over the Raiders in their first of two games on Saturday.
Colgate took a 1-0 advantage with a leadoff home run, but that is the only lead Colgate would have in the game.
In the bottom of the first, KK Crocker and Dylinn Stancil led off with back-to-back walks, and Sierra Frazier then tied the game with an RBI double to score Crocker. Two batter later, Jenna Olszewski's single and scored Stancil for a 2-1 lead.
Three batters later, Macey Petrey sent one to left center, and a miscommunication between the center and left fielder allowed two more Blazer runs to score, giving UAB a 4-1 lead after one.
UAB tacked on a fifth run in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout from Ashton Clem to give the Blazers a 5-1 advantage.
Colgate added two runs in the top of the fourth with a bases loaded walk and a bases loaded single, cutting the UAB lead to 5-3, but that is as close as the Raiders would get.
Amy Woodham entered the game to pitch the final 1.2 innings of the game and did not allow a hit en route to her first save of the season. Starting pitcher freshman Jaycee Cook picked up the win and is now 5-1 this season.
UAB 1, JACKSONVILLE 0
Emily Kachel was on fire in the circle en route to striking out a career-high 11 batters to lead the Blazers to a 1-0 victory.
Natalie Erwin provided the only run of the game with a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the fifth, and that was all Kachel would need.
The Kennesaw, Ga., native struck out five of the first six batters she faced and had seven Ks through three innings.
The Dolphins only had two singles for the entire game and did pass second base at all in the contest.
