BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Blazer Beach Bash with a 5-0 blanking of Eastern Kentucky and a 3-2 loss to Coastal Carolina.
UAB (4-2, 1-1 CCSA) defeated EKU in straight sets in four of the five matches aside from court four, and tallied its third consecutive 5-0 victory of the weekend.
In the afternoon match, UAB raced out to a 2-0 lead with victories on courts four and five. However, Coastal Carolina (7-1) stormed back in the second flight and won on courts one, two and three to secure the victory.
With the match tied 2-2, it came down to court two. After UAB took the first set 21-19, Coastal won the second set 22-20 and the final set 16-14 to give the Chanticleers the 3-2 victory.
"Today wasn't the outcome we wanted but it was the outcome we earned," head coach Kyra Iannone said. "We have young players on all courts and putting them in positions of pressure will get them experience. I trust that the team will come through in the latter part of the season as we gain that experience. We will continue to put trust in these players as they grow as a ream and as we grow as a program."
UAB is back in action next weekend at TCU as the Blazers will play three CCSA matches against Missouri State, TCU and No. 3 LSU.
