BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team won a pair of matches by scores of 5-0 over ULM and Nicholls State on the first day of action at the Blazer Beach Bash on Friday.
"Our focus this weekend was team identity, pair identity, execution of game plan and game style, so for us to win all 10 matches means a lot to our program," head coach Kyra Iannone said. "It is only our second day of competition this season and we're still working through some things starting freshman at many of our seeds. I'm very proud of them for having a fast learning curve and performing in the style we need them to."
UAB (3-1, 1-1 CCSA) stated the day by earning its first CCSA conference victory of the season by sweeping ULM 5-0. UAB has now won three in a row against the Warhawks and owns a 7-4 advantage over ULM in the all-time series.
Three of the five matches went three sets, but the Blazers were able to come out victorious in all of those matches. Kenley Adams and Emma Andraka on court one and Annie Pringle and Sarah Dickson on court five won their matches in straight sets. In her first collegiate action, Dickson picked up her first career win.
The second match of the day saw the Blazers defeat Nicholl State on all courts in straight sets. Brooks Stansel and Ashlee Stansel gave UAB the first point with a 21-15, 21-15 victory on court five. Arden Copping and Jenna Gathright followed that up with a 21-16, 21-17 win on court four.
Court two was the decisive point as SalliAnne Napolitano and Abbey Thorup made quick work of their opponents, winning 21-13, 21-11, to secure the team victory for the Blazers.
With two wins today, Senior Kenley Adams and freshman Abbey Thorup have each started the season undefeated at 4-0.
The Blazers are back in action on Saturday with two additional matches against Eastern Kentucky and Coastal Carolina. Action at Blazer Beach starts a 9 a.m. For more information, be sure to follow @UAB_BVB on Twitter and Instagram.
