BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field team concluded competition in the home-hosted Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday, earning a handful of top-five finishes.
"I'm so proud of the way our team competed this weekend. They made UAB and Birmingham proud," said coach Kurt Thomas. "We had every event area contribute, and that's what teams do."
Freshman Makiyah Sills had the highest finish for the Blazers on the day, tying for fourth in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.70 seconds. After Sills, UAB had three fifth-place finishes.
On the field side, junior Anna Massa landed in fifth in the pole vault reaching 3.86 meters. Going back to the track, junior Celestial Moon placed fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.57. To wrap up the day, the UAB 4x400m relay squad of seniors Karri Green and Marielle Lewis, junior Ebony Tolliver and grad student Lisa Petkov earned a fifth-place finish by timing out at 3:48.73.
"Brittany (Floyd) and Miren (Ederra) getting big points in the Pent was huge. The mid distance crew did their job, and Serena (Martinez) scored in the Mile, Cele (Moon) in the 800m and a huge podium finish with Beth (Evans) and Jabriana (Jemison) in the DMR. Makiyah had a big weekend finishing 4th in the 60m hurdles as a freshman. Anna got important points in the pole vault," added Thomas. "We had many other PRs in different events and finished just outside of finals in many other areas. These ladies did a great job, and our staff is proud of them."
Potential NCAA Regionals await some Blazers while many across the NCAA will turn their focus to the upcoming outdoor season. The next meet UAB is scheduled to compete in as a unit is the Spring Time Invite on March 21, the first collegiate meet scheduled to be held at UAB's new outdoor track and field facility.
