BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field team will welcome the conference to Birmingham on Saturday and Sunday, hosting the 2020 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships for the ninth consecutive season at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The event is set to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the men's 60-meter dash as part of the heptathlon. Competition will also begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday with the men's 60-meter hurdles of the heptathlon and wrap up with the awards presentation at 4:15 p.m.
The Blazers will compete alongside each C-USA program for the conference crown aside from Old Dominion, who does not have a program. The remaining teams joining UAB include Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Rice, Southern Miss, UTEP, UTSA and WKU.
"This is our most important indoor meet," said coach Kurt Thomas. "We are fortunate to host the conference championships each year at the amazing Birmingham Crossplex. Our whole indoor training and focus has been for this weekend. We have many ladies ranked well in the conference and several within striking distance of scoring team points (top 8). If we go out and do our job, we can have a successful championship meet."
The Blazers come into the championship with some of the top numbers in the conference as juniors Brittany Floyd (heptathlon) and Anna Massa (pole vault) each hold C-USA leading numbers in their respective events. Freshman Makiyah Sills also comes in with the fourth-best 60-meter hurdle time in the conference while senior Karri Green is currently fifth in the 400-meter run.
"Brittany Floyd is performing well to make a podium finish in the Pentathlon. Anna has vaulted well all year and can hopefully bring home some hardware," added Thomas. "Karri and Ebony (Tolliver) are running well in the 400m to score. Cele (Moon) and Marielle (Lewis) are experienced 800m runners and can hopefully make a final. Serena (Martinez) and Beth (Evans) have a great chance to make the finals of the mile. Our DMR and 4x4 are motivated to score points as well. Makiyah (Sills), Ashleigh (Ivory) and Kyla (Horn) are ready to perform in the 60m hurdles as well. Coach Esche and Coach Jordon have done a great job getting these ladies ready. Our team is focused and ready."
UAB most recently competed in the Samford Invite 2, tallying a slew of personal bests and six top-five finishes. Junior Brittany Floyd led the bunch, reaching a career-best 5.76 meters in the long jump to place second in the event.
A season ago, the Blazers were led in the event by graduate senior Emily Drouin, who scored 18 of UAB's 35 points for ninth place team finish. Drouin also took home the gold in the 5,000-meter run on day one of the championship.
UAB will next turn its attention to NCAA Championship Regionals based on their performance at the conference championships. Meet information and coverage for each will be provided on the UAB track and field schedule page if applicable.
