UAB Travels to Stetson For the Hatter Classic

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team will be on the road for the second time this season when they play back-to-back games at the 33rd Annual Hatter Classic in Deland, Fla.
The Blazers will first face Stetson on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. CST, before taking on Abilene Christian at 12:00 p.m. CST on Saturday. Both games will be played in Edmunds Arena on Stetson's campus.
UAB Lately
UAB (3-1, 0-0 C-USA) is coming off a fourth quarter 70-62 comeback win over Grambling State at Bartow Arena on Dec. 13. The Blazers outscored the Tigers 19-6 in the final frame, highlighted by 12 points from junior Margaret Whitley.
Whitley finished with a game-high 26 points. She averages more than 23 points per matchup, leading C-USA in 3-point field goals made (14) and ranking No. 2 in both scoring and free throw percentage (.943).
Doubling Up
Senior Zakyia Weathersby recorded a second straight double-double against Grambling State, racking up a career-high 13 rebounds and 13 points.
In the last two games, the center has combined for 35 points and 23 boards. She is shooting 61.8 percent from the field, the second-highest percentage in the conference.
Scouting Stetson
After the team's first four games were canceled, Stetson has gone 2-1 with wins over Edward Waters and Florida Memorial.
Yaz Wazeerud-Din is the leading scorer for the Hatters, averaging 12.3 points per game to go along with a team-high 10 steals.
Scouting Abilene Christian
The Wildcats will enter the game against UAB with a 6-1 record. Their sole loss was at No. 10 Texas A&M on Dec. 13.
ACU has a high-scoring offense, averaging more than 85 points per game and outscoring opponents 601-361.
The team's top scorer is Anna McLeod, who has been effective from behind the arc this season. She has gone 27 of 51 from 3-point range (52.9 percent).
Sunshine State Opponents
Friday will be the first time UAB has played in Florida since Jan. 5, 2019, when it went to Miami and left with a 83-59 win over FIU.
Head coach Randy Norton has a 10-4 record over teams in Florida.
