Blazers Secure First Victory at Hatter Classic

DELAND, FLA. - UAB women's basketball defeated Stetson 49-48 in dramatic fashion on the road in the last second of play on Friday afternoon, improving its record to 4-1.
With just one second remaining on the clock in the fourth quarter and the Blazers down 48-46, junior Margaret Whitley was fouled shooting a 3-point basket.
The junior guard went to the line with the outcome of the game in balance and sunk all three of her shots, giving UAB a 49-48 lead.
Stetson (2-2) ran across the court and missed a layup as time expired, securing the second road win this season for the Blazers.
Senior Zakyia Weathersby was just one point shy of her third straight double-double, racking up a career-high 18 boards and nine points against the Hatters.
Whitley finished with a game-high 15 points and four rebounds.
UAB opened the game slow offensively, not scoring for the first 3:46 of play.
Four different Blazers got on the board after that, with three-point baskets from both Whitley and Caitlynn Daniels, giving the Blazers a 14-12 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Each team scored nine points apiece in the second, with six of UAB's points coming from Whitley. The Blazers went into the half with a 23-21 lead.
UAB held the lead for more than half of the third quarter, before Stetson hit three back-to-back threes and entered the fourth quarter up 40-34.
Neither teams scored for the first two minutes of the final frame, before Daniels sunk her two free throws. Stetson held its largest lead of the game, nine points, with 6:34 left.
The Hatters held the lead up until the last second of play when Whitley went to make her baskets on the free throw line. UAB finished the game on an 8-0 run.
As a team, the Blazers shot 15 of 50 from the field and 3 of 15 from beyond the arc.
In her first career start, Daniels had a team and career-high three steals and scored nine points.
The Blazers now have a short turnaround and will play in the second day of the Hatter Classic tomorrow against Abilene Christian at 12:00 p.m. CST.
