BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team led a 70-62 fourth quarter comeback over Grambling State at Bartow Arena on Sunday afternoon, improving to 3-1 on the season.
Despite not holding a lead until 3:54 left in the game, the Blazers outscored the Tigers 19-6 in the final frame, led by junior Margaret Whitley with 12.
Whitley had a game-high 26 points, shooting 43.6% (7-of-15) from the field and making three baskets from behind the arc.
Senior Zakyia Weathersby recorded a second straight double-double, the third of her career, off 13 rebounds and 13 points. In the last two games, the center has combined for 35 points and 23 rebounds.
"I'm extremely proud of our team today and their no-quit attitude," head coach Randy Norton said. "It was a tough game, but I thought our team really had an outstanding fourth quarter. We got some great stops, executing our offense and playing with tremendous poise down the stretch."
Weathersby got UAB started quickly offensively to open the game, racking up four quick points in the first 25 seconds of play off of a jumper and two free throws. Though the Blazers held the lead for more than seven minutes of the first quarter, Grambling State (1-3) was able to chip away at the lead by scoring inside.
Fourteen of the Tigers' 18 points in the first 10 minutes were in the paint, and they went into the second up 18-15.
Opening the second quarter, both teams traded baskets, with Grambling State holding a 22-19 advantage with 7:46 remaining. The Tigers' then got hot offensively, going on an 13-6 run and 10-point lead. Despite fighting to cut the lead, UAB went into the half down 38-32.
Grambling State opened the third with a layup, before UAB scored the next seven points, including three back-to-back layups. Whitley had 10 points in the quarter, including two three-pointers.
After fighting through the fourth quarter, highlighted by Whitley, the comeback was completed with a 70-62 victory.
The Blazers will travel to the Sunshine State to play in the Stetson Tournament in Deland, Fla. UAB's first game is Dec. 18 vs. Stetson at 10:00 a.m. CT.
