UAB Hosts Grambling State on Sunday Afternoon

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB women's basketball team is looking to rebound after suffering the first loss of the season when it hosts Grambling State on Sunday afternoon in Bartow Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
UAB Lately
The Blazers (2-1) are coming off a 71-68 overtime loss to Mercer on Dec. 10. Despite shooting a season-best 43.3 percent (26 for 60) from the field, the game was decided on the free throw line.
UAB shot 52 percent (13 of 25) from the line and missed five in the last 2:18 of the fourth quarter.
Double Trouble
Zakyia Weathersby led the Blazers with 22 points and 10 rebounds against the Bears, earning her second career double-double and first of the season.
Her last double-double came a year ago on Dec. 30, 2019, when she scored 30 points and had 12 rebounds against Tuskegee. The senior leads Conference USA in field goal percentage (.654).
Junior Margaret Whitley was just two rebounds shy of her first career double-double against Mercer, posting 12 points and a career-high 8 rebounds.
Assistin' Armato
In just three games at UAB, junior Claudia Armato has already racked up a team-high 15 assists.
The junior transfer from Southern Utah currently ranks No. 2 in C-USA in the category, two assists off the lead.
Scouting Grambling State
The Tigers (1-2) arrive after winning their first game of the season on the road at Louisiana-Monroe.
One of Grambling State's losses came on Nov. 30 at LA Tech, a C-USA opponent that UAB will host on Feb. 12, and the other was to Florida.
The Blazers and Grambling State have only played twice in program history, with the last matchup in 2002. The series record is split at 1-1.
