BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Department of Athletics is excited to announce the creation of the Blazer Allies Education Fund. The fund will launch in conjunction with the National Day of Giving on Tuesday, Dec. 1. The Blazer Allies Education Fund will be an endowed fund geared towards the enhancement of educational and professional development opportunities for UAB student-athletes through Blazer Allies, which is the diversity inclusion arm of UAB Athletics.
Blazer Allies serves as a support arm of the UAB Department of Athletics and is charged with listening, aiding, educating, and developing strategic action on areas of diversity, inclusion, social justices, gender equity, LGBTQIA+, disabilities and social economic status. Blazer Allies is comprised of the entire department, including student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and university and community partners.
"Our commitment to Blazer Allies and education in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice is impactful and will be an ongoing effort for UAB Athletics," Director of Athletics Mark Ingram said. "We look forward to expanding diversity and inclusion opportunities through the growth of this fund and continuing to enhance our overall student-athlete experience."
Along with continued dialogue and a social media presence, Blazer Allies will also provide student-athletes, coaches and staff with educational programs and resources, including guest speakers, virtual and in-person trips to provide historical perspective, as well as other initiatives throughout the academic year. To make a commitment to the Blazer Allies Education Fund, please contact Blazer Boosters at (205) 996-9969 or email blazerboosters@uab.edu.
"Not only will Blazer Allies nurture the needs of student-athletes who seek refuge from injustices around the country, but it will feed the questioning minds of student-athletes for generations at UAB that want to be on the front lines of rebuilding this country," said Kamilah Mustafa, a senior forward on the UAB women's soccer team. "This group gives me another outlet to have my voice heard and allows me to stand up for people who look like me and their endless support feeds my drive for social justice."
"I think it's imperative that our student-athletes know how powerful their voices truly are, and it's our job to continue to provide the resources so they can self-educate and be able to go out and make a difference in our Birmingham community," said head women's golf coach Ryan Ashburn.
