BIRMINGHAM — The UAB cross country team is set to host the Conference USA Championships for the first time since 1995 Saturday morning.
The women's 6k race begins at 9 a.m. at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala. followed by the men's 8k at 10 a.m. Out of an abundance of caution, spectators will not be allowed.
"We are excited to host the Conference USA Championship this year," said head coach Matt Esche. "Last year we finished in sixth, but looking to improve on that this time around."
UAB is coming off a ninth-place finish at the Blazer Classic, held at Veterans Park two weeks ago. Sophomore Lauren Robinson paced the way for the Blazers with a 29th place finish with a time of 22:19.88.
Freshmans Isabel Valenzuela and Kathleen Schellman added top 40 finishes for UAB with career best 6k marks at the meet.
Joining the Blazers in the 13-team field include Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, FIU, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Rice, Southern Miss, UTEP, UTSA and WKU.
