Cross Country Places Fifth at the Conference USA Championships

Hoover, Ala. — Closing out the fall season, the UAB cross country finished in fifth at the Conference USA Championships on Saturday at Veterans Park.
"We couldn't ask for better conditions today," said head coach Matt Esche. "Last year we finished in sixth and this year we finished in fifth. We are always looking for improvement and that is what we did."
Lauren Robinson led the way for the Blazers to finish in 13th place with a time of 22:02.99 to earn All-Conference USA Second Team honors.
Freshman Isabel Valenzuela followed closely behind coming in 25th with a time of 22:39.10.
Rounding out the top seven for the Blazers were Laura Thompson (23:14.24, 38th), Alicia Abalos Cervera (23:30.72, 46th), Agok Auyen (23:30.72, 46th), Britney Johnson (23:38.17, 52nd) and Kathleen Schellman (24:15.11, 63rd).
In the overall team standings, Middle Tennessee came away with the team championship with a score of 31. The Blue Raiders had four athletes finish in the top five. Charlotte (75), Southern Miss (108), Rice (120) and UAB (167) rounded out the top five.
Grace Forbes of Rice took home the individual title with a time of 19:58.60 nearly a minute in front of the second place finisher.
