BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Department of Athletics and IMG College Sports/Blazer IMG Network have once again partnered with Protective Life Insurance Company to present "Protective Life Community Captains" at each of UAB's six home football games this fall. Through the Community Captains partnership, Protective Life and the Protective Life Foundation aim to recognize deserving non-profit organizations and individual heroes from the Birmingham community.
"Never have we had a more important time where we should be aligning our resources, talent and leadership to tackle the challenges we all face," said Eva Robertson, Vice President for Community Relations and Protective Life Corporation & Executive Director of Protective Life Foundation. "Through the Protective Community Captains partnership, we highlight and support organizations in our community that are doing that important work. Protective is proud to be able to share these organizations with the Blazer family each home game."
Due to COVID restrictions, this year's Protective Life Community Captains are recognized virtually with in-game video board elements throughout the game.
On Sept. 3 at the season opener, the UAB COVID-19 Research Team was honored as the first Protective Life Community Captains, represented by Dr. Tika Benveniste and Dr. Matt Might. Dr. Benveniste and Dr. Might are key leaders in the establishment of the UAB Urgent COVID-19 Research Fund. In addition, the Protective Life Foundation proudly supports the team of doctors and researchers working to focus specifically on COVID-19 research and treatment development.
Protective Life was honored to welcome Children's Harbor as the Community Captains for the annual homecoming game on Oct. 3. Year four of this partnership once again featured the names of Children's Harbor patients on the back of the teams' uniforms.
On Oct. 17, UAB Athletics and Protective Life recognized Breakthrough Birmingham for their efforts to reverse educational inequity in the Birmingham community. Breakthrough Birmingham is one of 24 affiliates of the Breakthrough Collaborative across the United States.
The Oct. 23 game highlighted Crisis Center Birmingham as the Protective Life Community Captains. The Crisis Center provides services to the unmet needs of people experiencing personal crisis or mental health issues and responds with services that promote coping, emotional health and well-being.
The Salute to Service game on Nov. 14 will honor veterans and their past and present sacrifices. Nich Carlisle will be honored as the Community Captain for his support of Wreaths Across America and the Currie-Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
On Nov. 27, the final Community Captain of the 2020 Blazer football season will be the Minority Health Center. The UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center functions to support research, training and outreach to reduce the health disparities experienced by vulnerable populations and disadvantaged communities locally, regionally and nationally.
Protective Life is proud to be a part of Blazer game day with the Community Captains program and is honored to recognize the great work these organizations do within our communities.
