BIRMINGHAM – A school-record 66 in the final round of the Callaway Gardens Invite propelled senior Tia Teiniketo to the tournament victory by one stroke on Wednesday in Pine Mountain, Ga.
Teiniketo (70-71-66 = 207, -6) entered the final round at -1 and shot five under today to defeat Tracy Rodriguez of Mercer by one stroke en route to setting the school record for UAB's lowest 18 hole score.
The Finland native only had one blemish on her scorecard in the final round as she tallied six birdies compared to just one bogey.
This is Teiniketo's second career individual victory. Last season, she won the USA Intercollegiate and set the school record for lowest 54 hole score (204, -12).
"What a great way for Tia to end her fall semester," said head coach Ryan Ashburn. "Her hard work fell into place this week and I couldn't be more proud of her."
Led by Teiniketo's individual victory and a Top 10 finish for freshman Shelly Chen, the Blazers finished sixth overall at the Callaway Gardens Lake View Course. Chen (69-76-70 = 215, +2) tied for seventh overall and finished the fall schedule by placing Top 15 in all four tournaments, including three top 10 finishes.
"I am very thankful we were given the opportunity to compete this fall," Ashburn said. "I think it helped us tremendously as a team and know what we have to work on for the spring. Shelly has greatly improved from last year finishing Top 15 in all four events. I am proud of our team for their committment during these times and am looking forward to next spring."
Stephenie Fowler (+19, 51st), Emilia Smith (+21, T53), Lexie Dawson (+24, 59th) and Marilyn Steed (+28, 61st) comprised the rest of UAB's lineup.
The Blazers played in four tournaments this fall and are now off until early February when they participate in the Winter Warm Up hosted by Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla. on Feb. 8-9.
