UAB Finishes in Fourth at Florida State Invitational Women’s 5k Open

Tallahassee, Fla. — UAB cross country had a strong showing at the Florida State Invitational Friday morning. The Blazers took fourth in the Women's 5k Open with the help from a Top-20 finish from freshman Isabel Valenzuela.
"We did a tremendous job with our pack," said head coach Matt Esche. "We are excited about how the girls did this week. This is going to be a lot of fun the next couple of weeks."
As a team, UAB started the race sitting in seventh at the one-mile checkpoint. The Blazers continued to bring the fight as they moved up the leaderboard throughout the meet to finish in fourth behind LSU (27, first), South Carolina (70, second) and South Alabama (118, third).
Conference USA rivals Southern Miss (125, fifth) and FIU (186, sixth) followed closely behind UAB in the team standings.
Individually, the Blazers had PR days for Valenzuela (18:40.6, 19th), Kathleen Schellman (18:58.8, 27th), Alicia Abalos Cervera (19:04.5, 29th) and Gracie Sears (19:55.2, 60th). Abalos Cervera broke her previous record time by over 20 seconds.
Lauren Robinson (18:47.5, 21st), Thompson (18:50.2, 24th) and Britney Johnson (19:17.4, 36th) rounded out the times for the Blazers.
South Alabama's Carolien Millenaar took home the individual title with a time of 17:34.0.
Up next, the Blazers host the fourth annual Blazer Classic at Veterans Park in Hoover on Oct. 16. The first race is scheduled to go off at 7:45 am. Meet information can be found by clicking here.
