UAB Cross Country Set to Host Blazer Classic at Veterans Park

BIRMINGHAM — Following a fourth place finish at the Florida State Invitational on Oct. 2, UAB cross country is set to host the annual Blazer Classic. The 6k race is set to take place at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala. on Friday beginning at 7:45 a.m. CST. Out of an abundance of caution, spectators will not be allowed.
"It is going to be an incredible meet," said head coach Matt Esche. "Tomorrow is going to be a lot of fun. Two weeks ago at Florida State, the ladies had a good day with some PRs and looking to continue the momentum from that race."
The women's field features top-ranked programs from last year including the 2019 NCAA Team Champions, Arkansas in the 'green' division. Competing in the 'gold' division with UAB include, Lee (TN), Southern Miss, South Alabama, Clemson, Auburn, Louisville, Arkansas State, FAU and South Carolina.
On the season, Lauren Robinson and Isabel Valenzuela have paced the Blazers through each meet. Valenzuela was named Conference USA Athlete of the Week on Oct. 6 after a 19th place finish at the FSU Invitational.
Along with Valenzuela (18:40.6, 19th) and Robinson (18:47.5, 21st), Laura Thompson (18:50.2, 24th), Kathleen Schellman (18:58.8, 27th), Alicia Abalos Cervera (19:04.5, 29th), Britney Johnson (19:17.4, 36th) and Gracie Sears (19:55.2, 60th) rounded out the top-seven finishers at FSU two weeks ago.
