UAB Finishes in Ninth at the Blazer Classic

Hoover, Ala. — In the first 6k race of the season, UAB cross country finished in ninth at the Blazer Classic at Veterans Park.
"It was a tough day for the Blazers," said head coach Matt Esche. "It was not the result that we wanted. But we had some good performances led by a 29th place finish from Lauren Robinson. Isabel Valenzuela and Kathleen Schellman rounded out the Top-40."
Individually, sophomore Lauren Robinson led the way for the Blazers with a 29th place finish with a time of 22:19.88. Isabel Valenzuela, the Conference USA Athlete of the Week from two weeks ago, followed behind with a 33rd place finish with a time of 22:29.14.
Alicia Abalos Cervera (23:15.13, 51st) and Hannah Bloom (23:49.87, 69th) had personal best days by beating their previous best 6k time by almost two-minutes.
Rounding out the top seven for the Blazers were Kathleen Schellman (22:38.26, 37th), Laura Thompson (23:29.03, 59th) and Bethan Evans (23:48.32, 68th).
Louisville's Purity Sanga took home the individual title with a time of 20:43.04, nearly 10 seconds in front of the second-place finisher.
In the overall team standings, Louisville took the title with 77 points. Clemson (106), South Carolina (115), Arkansas State (116) and Auburn (117) rounded out the top five teams.
Up next, the Blazers host the Conference USA Championships back at Veterans Park on Oct. 31. This marks the first time since 1995 UAB has hosted the cross country championship. Meet information and schedule will be available at a later date.
