BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field team will be back in familiar territory this weekend as it hosts the Green and Gold Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Friday and Saturday. After recently hosting the annual Blazer and Vulcan Invitationals, the weekend will mark the first installment of the Green and Gold Invitational.
Action on Friday will begin at 3 p.m. with the women's weight throw and conclude with the DMR beginning at 6:45 p.m. Saturday's competition will start at 10 a.m. with the men's pole vault and finish with the 4x400 meter relay.
Competing alongside the Blazers in the meet is conference opponent Middle Tennessee along with Arkansas State, Jackson State and UT Chattanooga, among others.
"We're excited to host another home meet this weekend," said coach Kurt Thomas. "Our team has competed at a high level the past two weeks, so we are looking at this meet to work on areas to keep improving, be that in an event that didn't go well last week or a shorter event to help with our longer running events. We'll also be able to get all of our athletes into some field events to keep working on those."
UAB most recently competed in the Vanderbilt Invitational and Samford Multi. Junior Brittany Floyd highlighted the results among the Blazers as she took gold in the pentathlon at the Samford Multi, winning three individual events outright. A group of Blazers in seniors Lisa Petkov, Karri Green and Marielle Lewis along with junior Ebony Tolliver teamed up for the best finish at Vanderbilt, finishing sixth in the 4x400 meter relay to rank fourth in the conference.
"Lauren Robinson ran a good 3k last week, so she'll drop down to the mile to see what she can do there. Several of our 400m runners will drop down and sprint a little this week. Brittany (Floyd) came off a pentathlon win and will work on some of those events. Anna (Massa) has vaulted well and is looking for higher bars," said Thomas. "It's another week to get better and keep preparing for a big trip to highly competitive meets in Boston and the upcoming C-USA Indoor Championships in February."
Next up, the Blazers will head north to compete in the Harvard Crimson and White Invite on Jan. 31 and the Boston Scarlett and White Invite on Feb. 1. Meet information and coverage for each will be provided on the UAB track and field schedule page.
