DALLAS – The UAB track and field junior Anna Massa has been selected as the Conference USA Female Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
"Anna jumped very well this week. She's a good vaulter, and we're working on things to allow her to jump higher as the season goes on," said coach Kurt Thomas. "She's a hard worker and is very deserving of this award."
Massa receives the honor after competing in the home-hosted Vulcan Invitational over the weekend, where she claimed her second gold in the pole vault in as many meets.
The Spaniard reached a personal best 3.95 meters to place second all time in UAB pole vault history. She only trails Neal Tisher, who reached a top mark of 4.06 meters, in the Blazer record books.
Massa's current season best of 3.95 meters tops the conference and leads the second-best mark in C-USA by 0.15 meters. On a national scale, the promising pole vaulter's season high is tied for 17th.
Prior to the recent Vulcan Invitational, Massa also took first place in the season-opening BSC Panther Ice Breaker Invitational, needing one jump to reach 3.90 meters for the win.
The Blazers will stay in town to compete at the Samford Multi on Jan. 16 at the Birmingham CrossPlex. UAB will then hit the road the next day to wrap up the weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational Jan. 17-18 in Nashville, Tenn. Meet information and coverage for each will be provided on the UAB track and field schedule page.
