BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field team claimed gold in an event for the third time this season and came away with multiple medals as it hosted the Vulcan Invitational on Saturday.
"We had another solid day of competition. Everyone came out and competed hard again today," said coach Kurt Thomas. "That's what you want to see this time of year - competing hard, trying to execute technically and pick up where we left off in the fall."
Junior Anna Massa was the lone Blazer to claim gold throughout the day, winning the pole vault for a new personal best 3.95 meters. That mark moves her into second all time in program history. The Spaniard has now taken home the gold for the pole vault in each meet she's competed in as a Blazer after previously coming out on top in the BSC Panther Ice Breaker.
Graduate senior Lisa Petkov and senior Karri Green were also able to medal, finishing second and third in the 200-meter dash, respectively. Petkov, a native of Germany, timed 25.35 seconds for second place in her first time running the event. The Piedmont, Ala., native in Green placed third with a time of 25.54 seconds.
The final UAB medalist was senior Jennifer Sharpe, who came in third in the triple jump after reaching a career high 11.31 meters. Junior Ebony Tolliver just missed the podium in the 60 meter dash, finishing fourth after clocking in with a personal record 7.71 seconds.
Senior Marielle Lewis was once again a top-10 finisher for the Blazers as well, finishing seventh in the 400-meter dash after clocking in at 58.79 seconds. Freshman Zoria Miller rounded out the top-10 finishes for UAB with a career-best distance of 12.09 meters in the shot put. The finish marked the Alabaster, Ala., native's first time reaching an event's top 10.
"We had lots of top 10 performances, which is always nice," said Thomas. "The sprinters and hurdlers raced well, and Lisa and Karri finished well in the 200m. Anna jumped well and won the pole vault. It was a good weekend overall and showed that we're in a good place to get this indoor season going. We're proud of the girls and will get back to work next week to keep getting better."
The Blazers will stay in town for their next action to compete at the Samford Multi on Jan. 16 at the Birmingham CrossPlex. UAB will then hit the road the next day to wrap up the weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational Jan. 17-18 in Nashville, Tenn. Meet information and coverage for each will be provided on the UAB track and field schedule page.
