BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's golf team continued its excellent play and leads the field heading into Tuesday's final round of the Starmount Forest Fall Classic at Starmount Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
The Blazers turned in the low score in each of the first two rounds. UAB shot 292 in the opening 18 holes and a 301 in the second 18. The Blazers are +17 overall and have an eight-stroke lead over UNC Greensboro (+25) heading into Tuesday.
"The last two events we've been in the final group and our goal this year is continue to put ourselves in that position," head coach Ryan Ashburn said. "Everyone had good rounds today and our two freshmen did a great job competing in their first event for the team. We just need to continue the positive momentum heading into tomorrow."
Individually, UAB's top two players are once again playing at a high level as Chiara Vikkula is tied for the overall lead at +1, while Tia Teiniketo is one shot behind her at +2 and is tied for third.
Vikkula shot an opening round 72 (E) and followed that by a one over 73 (+1) and is tied with Tara Bettle of UNCG. Teiniketo fired an opening round two-under 70 and was four-over in the second round for a collective two-over.
Following UAB's top two, Caroline Waldrop is tied for 14th at +8 (75-77), while Karlee Allen is one shot behind her at +9 and tied for 17th overall. Shelly Chen is tied for 30th at +13 and recovered nicely in the second round by shooting a 75 after an opening round 82.
The Blazers look to capture their second title of the season tomorrow when they round out the 54-hole tournament. Fans can follow live results by clicking here.
