GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UAB women's golf team won its second tournament of the season on Tuesday as the Blazers took home the Starmount Forest Fall Classic title hosted by UNC Greensboro.
UAB's second title improves the Blazers' overall record to 31-1-0 as UAB also won the USA Intercollegiate to open the season and took second at the Pirate Collegiate Classic last week. The 31 wins through three tournaments matches UAB's wins total from all of last year (10 tournaments).
The Blazers are off to their best start ever and became just the second team in program history to win two tournaments in the same season, along with the 2002-03 squad.
"Overall we're very happy with another win," said head coach Ryan Ashburn. "We didn't play the way we hoped today, but we got the job done. The more we can put ourselves in this position, the easier it will be to play with the lead."
UAB's top two players in Tia Teiniketo and Chiara Vikkula led the Blazers to victory as each tied for second place overall at +4. For Teiniketo, she now has a first, second and seventh place finish in her three tournaments this fall. Vikkula finished second last week at ECU as well, and has been top 20 in all three tournaments to start her UAB career.
"We're proud of Tia and Chiara for both finishing second in second place. It's been fun watching them compete for the individual title, and they both showed they have the potential to contend."
Despite shooting their lowest score of the tournament on Tuesday, the Blazers were able to hold off the host Spartans by one stroke for the victory.
Following UAB's top two, Caroline Waldrop finished tied for 24th overall, while Karlee Allen tied for 28th and Shelly Chen tied for 33rd.
Individually, Tara Bettle of UNCG took home individual honors at +1, while Jordan Cornelius of Towson joined Teiniketo and Vikkula in a three-way tie for second place.
The Blazers are now off for two weeks before returning to the course at the Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by College of Charleston in Kiawah Island, S.C.
