GREENVILLE, N.C. – The UAB women's golf turned in its second-consecutive outstanding performance as the Blazers took home second place at the Pirate Collegiate Classic hosted by East Carolina University.
Along with the second-place team finish, sophomore Chiara Vikkula placed second individually with a career-low -3 (73-69-71 = 213). The Belgium native ended her tournament with two-straight rounds under par.
"We learned a lot from our experience of winning last week and being in the final group this week," head coach Ryan Ashburn said. "The more we can put ourselves in contention, the more comfortable we will get being in that position.
"We were consistent again this week, but it was nice to have our lowest score of the tournament in the final round. We are really proud of Chiara who finished under par in only her second collegiate event. We look forward to carrying the momentum into next week four our third tournament of the season."
Along with Vikkula, UAB had three Blazers finish inside the top 10 overall as Caroline Waldrop and Tia Teiniketo each shot +7 and tied for seventh overall. Waldrop saved her best round of 73 for the final 18 holes, while Teiniketo recovered from an opening round 79 with back-to-back even par 72s.
Both Kenna Hughes and Stephenie Fowler moved up on the final day of action as Hughes finished tied for 27th overall (+17) and Fowler tied for 37th (+22).
Playing as an individual, Shelly Chen tied with Hughes at +17.
The Blazers are back in action next week, Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the Starmount Forest Fall Classic in Greensboro, N.C.
