BIRMINGHAM - For her record setting performance in leading the UAB women's golf team to its first team title since 2007, senior Tia Teiniketo has been named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week.
Teiniketo won the individual title by shooting -12 and was under 70 in all three rounds (67-68-69 = 204). In the process, she tied the school record for the lowest 18-hole score (67), and also set the school record for lowest 36-hole total (135) and lowest 54-hole total (204).
Overall, Teiniketo carded 15 total birdies, compared to just three bogeys.
"With it being her senior year, I'm so proud Tia now has a college win under her belt," head coach Ryan Ashburn said. "Ball striking has always been a strength of hers, but her putting finally came together this week allowing her to go low. She was confident going into this event and now she can carry this into the next event and the rest of the season. I am very excited to see what's in store for her this year."
The Vihti, Finland native led UAB to its best tournament in program history as the Blazers set the school record for the lowest 18-hole total (285) lowest 36-hole total (570) and lowest 54-hole total (868).
The Blazers were able to hold off North Florida who finished one stroke behind the Blazers, and it was Teiniketo who helped preserve the lead by sinking a birdie on the 18th hole to help lift UAB to victory.
UAB is back in action this coming Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 23-24, at the Pirate Collegiate Classic hosted by East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.
