BIRMINGHAM - Under the direction of second year head coach Ryan Ashburn, the UAB women's golf team opens the 2019-2020 season this weekend, Sept. 14-16, at the USA Intercollegiate hosted by South Alabama.
The tournament will be played at the Robert Trent Jones Trail - Magnolia Grove Crossings Course. The participants will play 18 holes on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, with Saturday and Sunday tee times beginning at 8 a.m., and Monday as an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The course will play Par 72 and 6,157 yards.
UAB's lineup consists of three returning starters and two newcomers. Senior Tia Teiniketo leads the Blazers as the top returning, while fellow senior Kenna Hughes and junior Stephenie Fowler also bring valuable experience. A pair of sophomores in Chiara Vikkula and Caroline Waldrop round out the lineup and are in the Blazer lineup for the first time in their careers.
UAB will also have three freshmen play as individuals in Karlee Allen, Rose Baral and Shelly Chen.
Along with the Blazers and South Alabama, the field consists of Arkansas State, Arkansas Little Rock, Bethune-Cookman, Georgia State, Grand Canyon, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Louisiana Monroe, Murray State, North Florida, Samford, Troy and WKU.
"We are excited to get the season started and I'm eager to see how our new players compete this weekend," said head coach Ryan Ashburn. "We are looking to take a huge step forward this year and this weekend will provide us a good gauge as to where we are and what we need to work on."
