BIRMINGHAM - The UAB cross country team travels to Nashville for the Commodore Classic Saturday. This marks the second consecutive year that the Blazers have competed in the Vanderbilt-hosted event.
"This weekend, we get to head up to Nashville for the Commodore Classic," said head coach Matt Esche. "We will see a lot of top-25 national teams. We will see some teams in the conference as well as regional teams. We have had two tremendous weeks of work. We have really been attacking the process. I look forward to this weekend and having a really good product to put out there."
UAB will join No. 15 Ole Miss, No. 26 Ohio State, Auburn, Belmont, Georgia, High Point, Indiana, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Louisville, Mississippi State, Missouri, Middle Tennessee, Santa Clara, Southern Miss, Tennessee Tech, host school Vanderbilt, WKU and Xavier at the event.
The women's side of the Classic will run a 6,000-meter race which begins at 9:15 a.m. CT.
The Blazers look to build upon the success they saw at the season-opening Memphis Twilight Classic last weekend when the team finished sixth overall. Lauren Robinson and Serena Martinez both placed in the top-20 in the event, running 18:37.95 and 18:41.98, respectively. UAB had four additional runners, Laura Thompson, Celestial Moon, Bethan Evans and Britney Johnson, place in the top 50 in Memphis.
Following Saturday, the Blazers will be back in action Sept. 28 in Huntsville, Ala. and Columbia, Mo. at the UAH Chargers Open and the Missouri XC Challenge.
