MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama scored twice 59 seconds apart in the first half en route to a 3-1 victory over UAB on Friday night. This was the Blazers' first of two matches in the Jaguar Classic.
The Blazers (0-2-1) came out the gates fast. They fired their first four shots on goal, but were unable to cash in against USA keeper Justice Stanford.
Bergis Fanney Einarsdottir and Briana Morris found the back of the net in the 35th and 36th minute respectively to give USA (2-0-1) a 2-0 lead which they carried into halftime.
UAB scored their lone goal in the 51st minute. Asha Zuniga stole the ball in the Jaguars end and was fouled, setting up a free kick just outside the right side of the box. Stella Kiss took the kick and found Megan Hudgens for a header which found the right side of the net past Stanford.
South Alabama stopped any momentum the Blazers had in the 60th minute when Morris scored for the second time in the contest, making the score 3-1.
For the game, South Alabama outshot UAB 17-7 and had eight corner kicks to the Blazers' two. Zuniga led UAB with a pair of shots, with Kiss, Hudgens, Kassandra Daniel, Sarah Buse and Betsy Ornelas each with one. Blazers keeper Johanna Popp made three saves.
"This was a disappointing performance overall," said head coach Erica Demers. "We lacked consistency is all aspects of the game tonight. We have to move forward and prepare for Sunday."
The Blazers will take on Troy (2-0-1) on in the final match of the event. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. on Sunday. The Trojans defeated Stetson 3-2 in the opening match of the evening.
