BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team will compete in its first live action on Saturday, hosting the annual Green and Gold match at 2:30 p.m. in Bartow Arena. The Green and Gold match is an intrasquad scrimmage and the first chance for fans to check out the Blazers this season, preceded by the UAB Volleyball Coaches Clinic and followed by UAB's Five Set Fundraiser.
"I'm excited for our fans to get back in the gym with us and to give them a chance to see our new additions," said coach Amy Pauly. "It's going to be a fun group for people to watch."
The day will begin with the Blazers hosting the coaching clinic at noon. The free clinic is designed for all middle school, high school and club coaches. Lunch will be provided for all clinic participants.
While the coaching clinic and match are free, fans are also invited to take part in UAB's Five Set Fundraiser after the Green and Gold match from 5-7 p.m. The event will be hosted in the Green and Gold room of Bartow Arena, featuring a meet and greet, trivia, cash play-in games and a taco bar. Fans may join in on the festivities at a rate of $30 per person or reserve a table for $240. A portion of the proceeds is tax deductible as well.
UAB enters its first live scrimmage of the season under the tutelage of its second-year staff and head coach Amy Pauly. The former Villanova associate head coach led the Blazers to an improved 13-15 record and 5-9 conference play mark in her inaugural season a year ago.
Among this season's returners from that squad are three of the top five attackers in outside hitters Abby Carlile, Emma Mitchell and Alex Kells. Carlile, a true junior, led the team last season with 286 kills and finished third in total blocks for the Blazers with 67 on the year. Mitchell came in behind Carlile in kills with 231 on the season. The redshirt junior also excelled in serving, tying for the team lead in service aces with 24 a year ago. Finishing just shy of 200 kills with 198 total for her redshirt freshman campaign was Kells, who finished fourth on the team with that tally and also notched the third-highest number of service aces for the Blazers with 18 on the year.
UAB will officially begin its 2019 campaign on Aug. 30 as the Blazers travel to Muncie, Ind., to compete in the Ball State invite, taking on Ball State at 10 a.m. and USF at 2:30 p.m. in Worthen Arena. Coverage information for the tournament is yet to be announced, but will be provided on a late date.
Volleyball season tickets are on sale by purchasing the 2019-20 Gold Card for $65. The Gold Card is an exclusive offer that grants you admission into all UAB volleyball, men's and women's soccer, women's basketball, baseball and softball events for the upcoming academic year.
