BIRMINGHAM - UAB track and field's Emily Drouin was named to the 2019 USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field team, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released on Monday.
"What an amazing accomplishment on an amazing career and season for Emily," said coach Kurt Thomas. "To be named an academic All-American is icing on the cake. It really speaks to her determination as a nursing student at the best nursing school in the country and as a high level athlete. We are so proud of her."
To qualify for the USTFCCA All-Academic honor, a student-athlete must carry a 3.25 GPA and meet one of two athletic standards. Drouin carries a 3.25 GPA and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships Preliminary meet. The sprinter was one of 902 female student athletes to earn the USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for the 2018-19 track and field seasons.
Drouin's time of 10:14.29 in the 3,000m steeplechase at the NCAA Prelims not only eclipsed her personal best, but also set a program record. The Ontario, Canada, native also held the previous UAB record after setting it at the Conference USA Championships, but surpassed that mark by over seven seconds in her final run. Drouin finished second in the event at the Conference USA Championships. Earlier in the season, Drouin had also timed a program record at the Raleigh Relays, concluding her historic career with three of the top five times for the 3,000m steeplechase in UAB history.
Drouin finished the Conference USA Championships with two silver medals in the steeplechase and 5000m after claiming the indoor 5000m conference championship earlier in the year. She earned Conference USA Outdoor Championships Female Co-Track Performer of the Meet honors for those efforts. On the season, the recent graduate won five events and placed in the top five in all 11 races.
