Drouin Wraps Up Blazers' 2018-19 Season with Program Record at NCAA East Preliminary

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – UAB Track and Field graduate senior Emily Drouin put a bow on the Blazers' season in record-setting fashion at the 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Fla., on Friday, clocking in at 10:14.29 in the 3,000m steeplechase to come in 16th out of 48 total runners as a member of the first heat.
Drouin's finish was a new personal best and eclipsed the school record she set at the Conference USA Championships by over seven seconds. She was the seventh of 16 runners to finish in her heat, bringing her historic season to an end.
Drouin qualified to compete in the steeplechase at the NCAA Prelims after placing second in the event at the Conference USA Championships. The Ontario, Canada, native set the previous school record at the event with a 10:21.76 time, also surpassing her previous record set earlier this season at the Raleigh Relays, before topping both on Friday to claim three of the top five times for the 3,000m steeplechase in program history.
Drouin finished the Conference USA Championships with two silver medals in the steeplechase and 5000m after claiming the indoor 5000m conference championship earlier in the year. For those efforts, Drouin was named Conference USA Outdoor Championships Female Co-Track Performer of the Meet. On the season, she won five events and placed in the top five in all 11 races.
Drouin's finish comes one day after Blazer junior Marielle Lewis also competed at the NCAA Prelims as she ran a 1:00.05 in the 400m hurdle competition to come in 31st out of 48 total runners as a member of the fourth heat. Lewis was the sixth of eight runners to finish in her heat.
With a successful spring in the books as the Blazers claimed gold on four separate occasions, UAB will set its sights on the upcoming fall season. UAB's 2019-20 track and field schedule has not been announced, but will be released on a later date.
