BIRMINGHAM – With three games left to play in the 2019 regular season, the UAB baseball team travels to Hattiesburg to face Conference USA leading Southern Miss for its final series of the year.
UAB (25-28, 10-17 C-USA) enters the weekend with some momentum in league play, having won three straight C-USA series for the first time since 2014. The Blazers are one of six teams within two games of the final two spots in the C-USA Tournament set for May 22-26 at MGM Park in Biloxi, Miss.
Zack Davis is the team's leader among active players offensively, batting .337 with 15 doubles, three triples and eight home runs. The right fielder boasts the fourth best slugging percentage (.594) in the conference and is coming off of a two RBI performance at Jacksonville State on Tuesday night.
Younger brother Jess Davis has been a force on the base paths, helping UAB to the fourth most stolen bases (134) in the NCAA and the eighth most swipes per game (2.5). Individually the freshman ranks second in stolen bases (47) and in stolen bases per game (0.9), while his two swipes against the Gamecocks moved into second place for most stolen bases in a season in UAB history.
The trip to Hattiesburg will mark the final regular season series for senior Carter Pharis who enters the weekend in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak. The infielder has played over 200 games in his time on the Southside and is tied for second in career doubles (57), needing five to tie the record and six to become the all-time leader.
UAB is scheduled to start a trio of right handers on the mound with Riley Davis (4-1, 5.11 ERA) going on Thursday, followed by seniors Tyler Gates (2-0, 4.91 ERA) and Tanner Graham (4-4, 4.62 ERA) on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Southern Miss (33-17, 19-8) is playing for the Conference USA Regular Season title this weekend as the Golden Eagles are tied with Florida Atlantic for the top spot. The Owls however hold the tie breaker, having taken two of three over the Golden Eagles earlier in the season.
Bryant Bowen leads the Golden Eagle offense, batting .347 with 34 runs scored on 58 hits, including 10 doubles, a triple and nine home runs. Additionally, Southern Miss has four other players hitting above the .300 mark in its lineup.
The Golden Eagles are scheduled to start RHP Walker Powell (6-2, 2.77 ERA) on Thursday night followed by LHP Stevie Powers (3-4, 4.40 ERA) before RHP Cody Carroll (2-1, 3.61) gets the start in the regular season finale.
The two remaining charter members of C-USA are no strangers to each other, having first met in 1980 and have played 107 time since that initial game. Southern Miss leads the series 71-37 and UAB is in search of its first win in Hattiesburg since 2015.
