CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Graduate student Emily Drouin claimed silver in the steeplechase on Saturday as the UAB track and field team completed competitions on day three at the Conference USA Championships.
Drouin ran a 10:21.67 in the race, setting a personal best and breaking a school record that she set on March 30 at the Raleigh Relays.
"The whole meet dealt with major schedule changes due to severe weather," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "The meet was moved earlier by several hours. We had some ups and downs. In the sprints and field events, we did not have our best day. These girls have competed hard and raced very well every week but today wasn't our day."
Serena Martinez notched a 4:39.74 in the 1500 meters, placing fifth and qualifying for the finals on Sunday. Celestial Moon also qualified herself for Sunday's finals in the 800 meters, running a 2:13.31 and finishing in the top-five.
Marielle Lewis put herself into the finals of the 400 meter hurdles competition, running a 1:02.20 and finishing in the top-10, coming in seventh.
Ebony Tolliver set a personal record in the 400 meters by running a 56.64 and placing in the top-15, besting her previous fastest time by .13 seconds.
"The distance squad ran well and we have Serena in the 1500 meter final tomorrow and Cele in the 800 meter final," Thomas said. "Marielle got in to the 400 meter hurdles final as well and a chance to score points. Emily Drouin did come away with a silver medal in the steeplechase and eight team points. We have some points on the line tomorrow with Zieandrea (Bridges) in the shot put, the 1500 meters, 800 meters, 400 meter hurdles, 4x100 and 4x400 relays, so there is a lot to run for."
