CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The UAB track and field team completed competition for day two of the Conference USA Championships on Friday night at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center.
"What a tremendous effort by the heptathletes and 10k runners," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Brittany (Floyd) had a career day and set personal records all over the place. A 411-point PR was massive and we came away with five big team points."
Graduate student Katie Nelson set a personal best in the 10,000 meters while also finishing second in the event by running a 36:07.61, more than a minute faster than her previous best time.
Floyd held strong and placed fourth in the heptathlon after posting several impressive scores on Friday and finishing with 5,142 points, a new personal record and the third-best point total in school history. The Columbus, Georgia native came in first in the heptathlon long jump with a 5.74 meter score, a personal best, before claiming third place in javelin (37.02 meters) and placing fourth in the 800 meters (2:24.39).
Freshman Laura Thompson notched a top-10 finish in the 10,000 meters, clocking a time of 40:23.69. Laci Turner finished in the top-15 in the heptathlon with 3832 points, another personal record, and Madison Kirkwood placed just outside the top-15 with 2712 points.
"Laci had a 127-point PR and just competed so well," Thomas said. "Katie and Coach (Matt) Esche had a great race strategy and it paid off with a podium finish at second place and eight team points. The girls set off the weekend and we are ready for tomorrow."
The Blazers currently sit in fifth place in team standings with 13 points, trailing Southern Miss (20), Charlotte (17), Marshall (16) and Rice (16).
