Norton Adds Weathersby to 2019 Class

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball head coach Randy Norton announced the signing of Zakyia (Kyia) Weathersby to the 2019 class on Tuesday.
Weathersby becomes the fourth addition to the incoming signing class, joining Jasmine Gracie (Huntsville, Ala./Madison Academy), Samantha Mitchell (Downers Grove, Ill./Montini Catholic) and Summer Schloss (Gastonia, N.C./Ashbrook) as members set to join the Blazers for the upcoming 2019-20 season.
"Kyia will be a great addition to our team," Norton said. "She excels on the court, in the classroom and has great leadership qualities. She is an outstanding scorer in the paint, rebounds the ball extremely well and is a tremendous teammate. We look forward to getting her on campus."
Weathersby comes to Birmingham after a two-year career at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Miss., where the forward helped the Bobcats to the second round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tournament as a sophomore. The forward had a breakout year for the Bobcats in her final season, leading the squad in rebounds (8.6) and finished third in scoring (10.6).
"UAB is getting a wonderful person and player," Jones County Junior College head coach Missy Bilderback said. "Kyia was critical to our team's success this season. She is someone who always leads by example and is a model student-athlete. Kyia brings toughness, rebounding, and a scoring paint presence. Her best basketball is still ahead of her and I look forward to watching the impact she will have at the next level."
Weathersby joins a UAB program in the midst of its most successful tenure in program history, having amassed a 54-14 record over two seasons, including a Conference USA Regular Season Title and a pair of WNIT Second Round appearances.
In 2018-19 alone the Blazers set program bests in 3-pointers (291) and finished the season ranked in the top-15 nationally in eight categories, including three within the top-five.
"UAB is a great place," Weathersby said. "It is an atmosphere filled with good people and an amazing coaching staff that cares and knows how to win. It was an easy decision for me because I knew I would be putting myself in a place to not only grow as a player but also as a person."
